Punjab Kings pulled off a record 16-run victory against Kolkata Knight Riders in a tense low-scoring clash in New Chandigarh, defending a meagre 111, the smallest total ever defended in IPL history. Despite skipper Shreyas Iyer’s golden duck against his former franchise, he emerged victorious in a bittersweet reunion with KKR CEO Venky Mysore post-match.
What was thought to be a sure-shot victory for the visitors, turned out to be a nightmare as the Men in Purple collapsed after a middle-order tumble. While the match went south for KKR, the co-owner Venky Mysore didn't miss the opportunity to catch up with the former leader of his franchise.
Venky Meets Ex-Captain Shreyas Iyer After Retention Controversy
After the match, the cameras captured Venky Mysore and Shreyas Iyer together chatting as Narine stood beside them.
The two interacted for the first time since their fallout over retention disagreements ahead of the 2024 auction, with PBKS climbing back into the top four after the thrilling result.
The Iyer Split and Retention Controversy
Shreyas Iyer, who led KKR to their first IPL title in a decade last season, was surprisingly not retained by the franchise. While mutual respect lingered, retention talks collapsed due to communication gaps. The Indian star eventually joined PBKS for INR 26.75 crore at the auction, leaving behind a legacy at Kolkata.
KKR’s CEO later clarified that retention required mutual agreement, "Sometimes along the line, that agreement doesn’t happen because of various factors; money or somebody wants to test their value... He was No.1 on our list."
However, Iyer revealed feeling sidelined after initial discussions: "For a few months, there was a layover and no concrete effort in having a retention talk. I was perplexed... We parted ways mutually due to lack of communication."
Now, months later, visuals of Mysore and Iyer sharing a cordial chat post-match hinted at closure. While Punjab celebrated their gritty win, KKR felt exposed with their middle-order inconsistency and will need to regroup before they face Punjab again to avenge the lowest total defended by the team.
