Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique missed out on a well-deserved ton after he was dismissed for 96 in the first session of the final day of second Test in Karachi. Shafique along with captain Babar Azam had frustrated the Australian bowlers on the penultimate day.
The two batters eventually compiled a partnership of 228 runs for the third wicket before Shafique was caught by Steve Smith off Pat Cummins. Babar, on the other hand, had already notched up a century.
The home side was 254/3 at the end of the first session and need 252 more to win with Babar unbeaten at 133 and Fawad Alam at 3* at the crease.
Australia had earlier handed a target of 506 to Pakistan after scoring 97/2 (D) in the second innings. Opener Usman Khawaja who scored a hundred in the first innings, remained unbeaten at 44 while Marnus Labuschagne scored 44 during the course.
The first encounter in Rawalpindi ended in a draw.
