Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting recently gave his pick for the “most naturally talented player” he has ever come across. A batting behemoth himself, the 49-year-old played with and against a multitude of legendary cricketers during his 17-year-old international career.

Despite having played against Sachin Tendulkar as well as shared a dressing room with the Indian batting great for the Mumbai Indians franchise, Ponting snubbed India’s 2011 World Cup winner to name two other icons from his playing days.

While speaking with Sky Cricket, Ricky Ponting was asked to give his picks for the “most naturally talented player” he has ever come across. Without much hesitation, the newly-appointed Punjab Kings head coach named South African all-round giant Jacques Kallis the most “talented cricketer” for his astonishing record.

Citing his batting as well as bowling records in international cricket for the Proteas, Ponting also described Kallis as “one of the most underrated players” that has ever played the game.

Apart from Jacques Kallis, Ricky Ponting picked another ex-nemesis, Brian Lara, as the “most naturally talented batter”.

Last month, Ricky Ponting was announced as the new head coach of the Punjab Kings franchise, replacing Trevor Bayliss in the process.

With Ponting at the helm, one can expect the franchise to make multiple in-squad changes and some big retention announcements in the coming weeks. Considering the IPL 2025 mega auction is on the horizon, it remains to be seen how a new-look Punjab Kings team would look under the guidance of the former Australian cricketer.
