Notably, Shami hasn't recovered from the ankle injury he sustained during the 2023 World Cup. As a result, he wasn't cleared to feature in the two-match series against the Proteas in their backyard. The BCCI will soon announce his replacement.

The BCCI has also clarified that experienced batter Shreyas Iyer will join the Test squad after the first ODI. Therefore, he won't be available for the remaining two matches of the ODI series.
