The Ajinkya Rahane-led Mumbai cricket team is set to be felicitated by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) after clinching its first Irani Cup title in 27 years. The ceremony, to be held at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, will honour the team's remarkable performance against the Rest of India.

Mumbai's Irani Cup triumph marks their first since the 1997-98 season, and it came after a dominant show against a strong ROI side. Mumbai took a crucial first-innings lead of 121 runs after Sarfaraz Khan slammed a double ton.

In the second innings, all-rounder Tanush Kotian's century further strengthened Mumbai's grip on the match. While ROI captain Abhimanyu Easwaran tried to lead his side with a stellar 191, Mumbai eventually set a challenging 450-run target.

With just over a session of play remaining on the final day, ROI skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad shook hands with Ajinkya Rahane, acknowledging Mumbai's dominance and signalling the end of the match.

Meanwhile, MCA president Ajinkya Naik confirmed that the Mumbai team would be honoured at the Wankhede Stadium for their recent triumph. Attendees will include MCA officials, Apex Council members, maidan and club representatives, as well as members of the Cricket Improvement Committee.

“Once again, Mumbai demonstrated an outstanding example of grit and determination. The boys upheld the tradition of playing ‘khadoos’ cricket, excelling throughout the five days. It was a perfect display of teamwork, with each player fulfilling their role brilliantly. After last year’s Ranji Trophy victory, this Irani Cup triumph adds another feather to our cap,” Naik said.

Naik praised the team for their resilience and traditional "khadoos" style of cricket. Notably, this victory builds on the momentum from their 2023 Ranji Trophy championship, reaffirming Mumbai's status as a domestic powerhouse in Indian cricket.

Sarfaraz Khan equals Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid feat in the Irani Cup

Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan has equalled a remarkable feat held by Indian cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid. With his century against the Rest of India (ROI) in the recent Irani Cup, Sarfaraz joined Tendulkar and Dravid in scoring two centuries in the tournament's history.

While Sarfaraz has reached this milestone, the record for the most centuries in the Irani Cup is still held by Dilip Vengsarkar and Gundappa Viswanath, who both have four centuries each to their names.
