New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson has hailed India’s “truly remarkable” winning triumph in Australia. India made a fine comeback in the series after suffering a defeat in the first Test against Australia.
They were bundled out for 36 in the second innings of the first Test but turned tables in the second encounter to clinch a win. The third Test ended in a draw while India won the fourth and final match in Brisbane.
India were plagued with injury concerns with players Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, KL Rahul, Hanuma Vihari getting ruled out during the series. R Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah missed the fourth match after not being fully fit.
Despite missing the key players, India rode on some fine performances from the youngsters to defend the Border-Gavaskar trophy.
“Anytime you play Australia it’s incredibly tough and to play in their backyard is an added challenge. For India to go there and perform the way they did, in particular with so many injuries and players out. It was truly a remarkable victory,” Williamson told Sports Today.
“No doubt, India would have been absolutely thrilled, the supporters watching that match I am sure the team got a huge buzz out of that as well,” he added.
India are now slated to play a four-match Test series against England at home while New Zealand got some news on Tuesday after they became the first team to qualify for the WTC finals. The Blackcaps have qualified for the finals after Australia postponed their tour of South Africa citing COVID-19 issues.
