Cricket Australia (CA) on Tuesday postponed their tour of South Africa citing COVID-19 issues in the country. CSA later expressed their disappointment on the postponement of the tour. CA has now defended their call and described it as “heartbreaking”.
"We share their disappointment, we've all worked to make this tour happen," CA interim chief executive Nick Hockley told reporters.
"At the end of the day, the weight of medical advice and our duty of care to players and staff meant we were really left with no alternative."
Earlier, CSA’s director of cricket, Graeme Smith said, “We are extremely disappointed by the decision of CA.”
“CSA has been working tirelessly in recent weeks to ensure that we meet every single expectation of CA.”
“This was set to be the longest tour in a BSE (bio-safety cabinet or biological safety cabinet) comprising a three-match Test series that was scheduled to begin with Australia’s arrival later in the month. So to be informed about the CA decision at the eleventh hour is frustrating.”
The Australian side was slated to play three Tests in South Africa.
The postponement of this tour means that the New Zealand team has qualified for the WTC final.
