Current Head coach of the Australian national team Justin Langer reportedly refused a six-figure bonus from Cricket Australia in the pandemic affected times. Peter Lalor and Robert Craddock reported for The Daily Telegraph that when the coach was appointed in 2018, in pre-Covid times, his contract included several bonuses relating to the performance of the national team.
The ICC T20 World Cup and Ashes-winning coach, however, chose not to activate several clauses due to the shedding of staff by Cricket Australia in their drive to save $40 million.
Neither party chose to make the matter public.
The former opener at the moment is waiting on a decision from Cricket Australia where they are yet to decide if Langer would be given a fresh contract. While it looked like the end of Langer after Australia were drubbed in a historic Test series by half-strength India, things changed through the later part of the last year as Australia first won the World Cup in UAE and then smashed England in the Ashes at home.
Australian players were reported to have leaked information about Langer’s hard methods in training camp last year, however, the tone has softened in recent times.
Langer was also inducted in the Australia Cricket Hall of Fame in January 2022.
