Irani Cup and Duleep Trophy to return for the 2022-23 domestic season

India’s 2022-23 domestic season will mark the reintroduction of the Duleep Trophy and Irani Cup. The former was last held in 2019, as the Covid-19 pandemic curtailed the domestic season.

The decision to reintroduce the two events was taken at the Apex Council Meeting held in Mumbai on July 21, Thursday. Duleep Trophy has been around in the domestic circuit for quite a while now, with the first edition being conducted in the 1961-62 season. The tournament will be conducted in a zonal format, with the five zones selected by the BCCI.

Irani Cup marks its return, with a possibility of a full-fledged Ranji Trophy

In another development, Irani Cup will also return to the domestic calendar. It is a one-off five day match between Ranji Trophy Champions and the Rest of India. The tentative dates for the traditional tournament are October 1-5, 2022.

A full-fledged Ranji Trophy season is also on the cards. The leading first-class tournament is all set to commence on December 13, 2022. The league stage is expected to conclude in January next year and the knockouts will be held in the month of February.
