IPL Mega Auction 2022 | Kane Richardson reflects upon his ‘damaged reputation’ in IPL

As the two-day Indian Premier League (IPL) Mega Auction ended, many star players failed to attract even a single bid. The list includes the names of Australia cricketers Kane Richardson and Adam Zampa, who represented the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) last season.

As India became a hub of massive COVID-19 cases during April-May in 2021, IPL also witnessed a few withdrawals as foreign players chose to opt out of the tournament midway. Richardson and Zampa also did the same and now that both the Aussies have gone unsold, the pacer believes that their withdrawal last year has played a role in it.

"I was definitely more shocked for him. To be brutally honest, when we left last year, in early circumstances, I remember having a conversation with him. I said to him, look, this may come back and bite us, and at that time it wasn’t a priority for us to be there. We wanted to get back to Australia," Richardson said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

"So I think there’d be some kind of buyers that’d be pretty wary of picking us up thinking that we wouldn’t come again. I definitely think that’s a factor. I’m just speaking on what I think would be a factor in it. I don’t know. I’ve never had a dialogue with a franchise or a person that says that’s what would be the case. But I think I didn’t go the year before as well with the birth of my boy.

Richardson opined that the decision to leave India early has damaged his reputation as the franchises now have no faith in him.

"So my reputation probably is that in the last couple of years I haven't gone so it's obviously not something that I am. I try and play as much cricket as I can. But I think the circumstances in the last couple of IPLs have made me not go. But it's not a reputation I want," Richardson mentioned.

"So that's just us brainstorming. I think that'd be a point of them being wary of us turning up, but I'm not 100 per cent sure," the 31-year-old concluded.

Richardson had an extraordinary outing with the ball yesterday and claimed three scalps, giving away mere 21 runs in a T20 match against Sri Lanka.

PSL 2022 | Will Smeed's efforts go in vain as Quetta Gladiators suffer defeat vs Peshawar Zalmi

Quetta Gladiators' Will Smeed's brilliant effort with the bat went in vain against Peshawar Zalmi as the side fell short by 24 runs to lose the match. Chasing 186 in 20 overs, the Gladiators lost wickets at regular intervals but Smeed held the fort from one end as he missed out on a century by just one run as he struck 99 off 60, a knock that included three sixes and 12 fours during the course. But none of the other batters were able to make a significant contribution as the team was restricted to 161/8 in 20 overs. Usman Qadir scalped three wickets for 25 runs in 4 overs. Earlier, the Peshawar side lost a couple of early wickets within the first two. Mohammad Haris and Shoaib Malik later had a parternship of 52 runs for the third wicket before Haris also departed for 29 off 17. Malik was then joined by Talat in the middle and two batsmen steadied the ship for the side and chipped in with individual fifties. Later, Ben Cutting got into the and played a cameo to score 36 off 14 to help his team put 185/7 in 20 overs on the board. Naseem Shah was the pick of the bowlers for his side after he bagged a four-wicket haul for 27 runs in 4 overs. "We have been seeing runs on the board is better as the ball holds to the surface and that's the reason we played an extra spinner. We got two good partnerships after losing early wickets and that is what we need keep doing," Wahab said after the match.

Glenn Maxwell pulls out of Pakistan tour; set to miss few IPL games

Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has confirmed his unavailability for Australia's tour of Pakistan, starting from March 4. Wedding bells will soon ring for Maxwell as the cricketer is set to marry his fiance Vini Raman in late March this year. With his wedding and international assignment clashing, Maxwell had no choice but to opt out of the upcoming Pakistan tour. Notably, the 33-year-old is likely to miss the opening matches of the forthcoming IPL edition as he will still be in Melbourne for his wedding during that period. The Aussie is in contention to lead the Royal Challengers Bangalore as the franchise's former skipper Virat Kohli announced his resignation last season. Giving details of his wedding plans, Maxwell said that the change in Australia's cricketing schedule led to this unavoidable situation. "Originally when I organised the dates with CA there was a two-week gap where I could potentially have it. So when I sorted that out I was pretty happy that I wasn’t going to be missing in any series," Maxwell was quoted as saying to Fox Cricket. "And then I came to the [CA] contract meeting midway through last year and they said well this is [when] the Pakistan series [is on] and I thought well obviously that’s changed since the last conversation we had," he added. Meanwhile, the Australian team will be visiting Pakistan after 24 years for a tour, which consists of a three-match Test series, followed by three ODIs and a one-off T20I match.
