A chaotic situation unfolded during Day 1 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 Mega Auction as the auctioneer Hugh Edmeads collapsed and fell from the rostrum in the midst of a Rs. 10.75 crore-bid for Sri Lanka all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga. The tension in the room eased when it was confirmed that Edmeads had an unfortunate fall due to “Postural Hypotension" but is stable.
Now that the show needed to be resumed, a search for the new auctioneer began. The IPL chairman Brijesh Patel called renowned presenter and commentator Charu Sharma, giving him a brief description of the circumstances.
Sharma, who does not live very far away from ITC Gardenia Hotel in Bangalore, was ready and arrived at the venue in minutes. In an interview with Sportstar, the stand-in auctioneer revealed details of his call with Brijesh Patel.
"I don't live too far from the hotel. So Brijesh called me and said, 'just put on some clothes and run'... I was there in just 15-20 minutes. They briefed me for a bit and then we were on," the well-known TV presenter told Sportstar.
"I am also a regular auctioneer and have held a lot of auctions for several other leagues, except for the IPL. I was only doing what I did in the past.”
Further in the interaction, Sharma added that the auction went on smoothly even after facing an early hiccup.
"I don't think there were too many complications in the system that were set for the auction. The auction itself has a pattern, and the rest is all structured. Once you have a structure in place, it is not very complicated. But yes, still one expects certain butterflies in the stomach, but given the fact that I have done commentary stint for the past 40 years if I still have butterflies in my stomach, then when will they ever go away?" the Director of Pro Kabaddi League mentioned.
Following his outstanding work, Sharma was given a standing ovation by all the members sitting in the room. Edmeads resumed auctioneering duties during the final leg of the grand two-day event and earned an applause as well.
