INDW vs ENGW | Jhulan Goswami comes to batters' aid after failure against England

India's topsy-turvy World Cup campaign suffered a hit today as the defending champions England blasted their way off to a comfortable victory against them. Indian batters crumbled under pressure and could record mere 136 runs in their innings, the paltry target which England achieved in the 32nd over with four wickets to spare.

After their horrid show against England, India pacer Jhulan Goswami backed her side's batters to come good in the upcoming matches and give the team a chance of advancing to the semi-finals.

Jhulan informed about India's plan today and the target they aimed to set for the opposition. The veteran supported skipper Mithali Raj on the issue of her poor run in the ongoing tournament and reckoned that the batting unit would be back to its best in the next game.

"Our plan was definitely to play 300 balls, but unfortunately, we could not play full 50 overs. So, definitely, we had to pay the price for not playing the full 50 overs because our target was 240-250, which, at this ground, would have been a par score. Had we been able to do that, would have definitely been able to restrict them," Jhulan said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

"I don't think so - [that] it [lack of runs from Nos. 3 and 4] is a concern. You know who is batting at No. 3: it's Mithali Raj. [She] is just one big knock away from her start. Past [previous] series also she was batting fantastically. It's just [that she is] one big knock away from [hitting form] in this tournament. I think Deepti also did a pretty decent job. And [at] No. 5 Harman [Harmanpreet Kaur] is playing, so I don't think so we have an issue. It's just one bad day that we didn't click as a batting unit," she added.

When asked about India's constant collapses while batting, the 39-year-old asserted on the "process" and reverberated that the team would come back stronger after their recent loss.

"There is no solution to it. It is a process and the game goes like it. Some day [the] top order will not work, some day middle order will not work; this is how this game has been played... but definitely it is a learning process, every day we try to address certain issues. We will definitely solve those issues and come back strongly.

"Honestly speaking, at this moment, yes, our top order, the way we are thinking, they haven't fired. But I am sure we will have to be positive about that because they have done really well in the past," Jhulan mentioned.

India will now square off against Australia, the numero uno title contender. However, Jhulan did not seem wary about her side's future but acknowledged that a few issues need urgent addressal before their next clash.

"This is such a big tournament, where, over a seven- or eight-match period, you are bound to go through ups and downs. You cannot have a straight graph. Ups and downs are part and parcel of the sport but what's important is how we come back as a group when we take the field [again] and how we better the plans we have drawn up. The mood within the team is very good, everybody is very relaxed and everybody knows what their role is. It's just that today was a bad day when we couldn't execute our plans.

"In this World Cup every match is very much important and every match - it's not easy. You can't predict and definitely you have to bounce back when you're playing against one on the best teams in the world. We have few days. We'll definitely sort out whatever things are there. And definitely go there and play positive cricket," Jhulan concluded.

PAK vs AUS | 2nd Test | Day 5: Babar Azam, Rizwan show mettle, taking series to decider

After a long day at the office for both Pakistan and Australia, there was nothing that could set the two teams apart. The second Test between the two sides ended in a draw after the home side put up a great fight, courtesy some brilliant batting from opener Abdullah Shafique, captain Babar Azam and wicket-keeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan in the second innings in Karachi. While Shafique was the first one to depart for 96 in the day, Babar on the other hand continued with his form and thoroughly dominated the Australian bowling unit for the majority of the day’s play. But it took just one delivery from Nathan Lyon to send the Pakistan skipper packing for a well-compiled 196. The right-hander was caught by Marnus Labuschagne who was stationed at short leg. But Rizwan on the other side, went on to score a terrific hundred and remained unbeaten at 104 at the end of the match. After the dismissal of Fawad Alam at a team score of 277, Rizwan and Babar joined hands and stitched a partnership of 115 runs for the fifth wicket before the captain eventually departed. The home side then suffered a few quick blows and were reduced to 414/7, giving the Australian side a slight chance of clinching a win. But Rizwan showed great mettle and held the fort at one end to eventually end the clash in a draw. Nathan Lyon scalped four wickets in the second innings for 112 runs in 55 overs while Pat Cummins had a couple of scalps to his name. “The plan was to bat session-by-session and build partnerships. It was a team effort, as others (Shafique and Rizwan) chipped in with useful contributions too. We took the onus and the main focus was to build partnerships right throughout the day. Rizwan was outstanding as he saved the Test for us eventually,” Babar said after the match. The action will now shift to Lahore for the final Test slated to begin on March 21, 2022.

IPL 2022 | Foreign players likely to miss initial phase of the competition

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 is set to commence on March 26, 2022. Chennai Super Kings will be up against Kolkata Knight Riders in the opening encounter in Mumbai. The cash-rich will also have a couple of new teams, Gujarat Titans and Lucknow SuperGiants in the competition making it a 10-team tournament. But before we move further, the IPL 2022 is likely to be without some prominent faces in the initial phase of the competition. Here we take a look at the players. Delhi Capitals The Delhi Capitals probably have one of the most balanced lineups in the IPL 2022 but the franchise might suffer a blow as a few important players will miss some rounds of the games. Australia are playing Pakistan in an away fixture at the moment and David Warner and Mitchell Marsh are likely to miss a couple of matches. On the other side, Mustafizur Rahman and Lungi Ngidi are part of their respective national sides. Bangladesh are touring South Africa for three ODIs and two Tests. Anrich Nortje will be out due to injury. Lucknow Super Giants One of the two newly included franchises, Lucknow SuperGiants are likely to be without the services of Marcus Stoinis, Jason Holder, Kyle Mayers, and Quinton de Kock for some games. England pacer Mark Wood’s availability has come under dark clouds after he sustained an elbow injury during the 1st Test against West Indies. All-rounder Marcus Stoinis will only be available for the fixtures after the T20Is and ODIs against Pakistan. Punjab Kings Punjab Kings had first released a number of key players but also bought some big names, especially in the T20 format during the mega auction. The Mayank Agarwal-led side however, will not have the likes of Jonny Bairstow, Kagiso Rabada, Nathan Ellis for some matches. Bairstow is likely to miss one match as he is a part of the England’s Test squad while Ellis might be unavailable for four games. Pacer Rabada is expected to miss between one to five matches. Royal Challengers Bangalore The Royal Challengers Bangalore recently announced Faf du Plessis as the new skipper after Virat Kohli had stepped down from the post. The RCB will be without some of their Aussie recruits in the early stage. Josh Hazlewood will be available only after the completion of Australia’s Test series against Pakistan while all-rounder Glenn Maxwell will be getting married to his fiancee. Jason Behrendorff is a part of the T20I and ODI squad and is expected to join the squad only after the conclusion of the fixtures. Gujarat Titans Gujarat Titans are the second team which has been included in the IPL and will be led by all-rounder Hardik Pandya who has earlier played for the Mumbai Indians. The Gujarat-based franchise’s some games won’t feature South African David Miller and West Indies bowler Alzarri Joseph. Miller is a part of the South African team for the white-ball fixtures against Bangladesh while Joseph is with the West Indies team for the Test series against England. Sunrisers Hyderabad The 2016 edition’s champions will not have some of the South African players, such as Marco Jansen and Aiden Markram for a few games. Jansen and Markram will be featuring in the ODI series against Bangladesh. The two sides might also miss more matches in the IPL 2022, depending upon the squad announcement for the Test series. Australia’s Sean Abbott has been included in the T20I and ODI squad against Pakistan. Rajasthan Royals Rassie van der Dussen will be missing atleast first couple of matches as he is a part of South Africa’s ODI squad for Bangladesh series. The tally can go up give matches if he is picked in the Test squad as well. Kolkata Knight Riders The Kolkata Knight Riders made a few tweaks in the squad and handed the captaincy to Shreyas Iyer. Now, they will be without some prominent faces for some games. Pat Cummins is leading the Australian squad in the Test series against Pakistan and will only be available after the completion of the fixtures. Aaron Finch who was included as the replacement for Alex Hales will be featuring in the white-ball matches and will not be available for the first few matches. Mumbai Indians Mumbai Indians are more or less pretty sorted with their squad. All the key players are available to play for the franchise. But Jofra Archer who has been out of action for more than a year due to injury will be out. "As it stands, it was always going to be next year. But I think I have progressed a bit faster than we all thought we would have which is still good but it's still gonna be next year. I don't want to get anyone's hopes up too high. I don't want to disappoint anyone. So I'm going to say next year," he had said earlier. Chennai Super Kings South Africa’s Dwaine Pretorius is with the squad for the ODI series against Bangladesh and will miss the initial few matches.
