In a significant development, India have been demoted to number three following their disastrous defeat in the second Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia at Adelaide Oval. After securing an emphatic 295-run win in Perth, the visitors fell flat against Australia's rampant bowling unit in Adelaide, losing the pink ball Test by ten wickets.

Their shambolic outing affected India's World Test Championship campaign, demoting them to number three in the standings. Meanwhile, Australia and South Africa made big moves in the points table, claiming the first and third positions, respectively.

As shown in the above table, India claim the third position with a PCT of 57.29, while Australia and South Africa occupy the top two slots. England, following their thumping win versus New Zealand, were promoted to number five and are placed below Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, despite securing a whitewash over India, the Blackcaps' WTC final dream is done and dusted after their second consecutive home Test defeat to the Englishmen.

Are India Out Of WTC Final Race?

However, despite claiming the third position, India still have a chance to turn things around if they win their remaining matches in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. With South Africa likely to sustain their home dominance over Pakistan, it might be a straight shootout between India and Australia for the second finalist's slot. If they win their remaining three matches, India can take their PCT to 59.64 and hope Australia to lose against the Lankans.

However, Australia have an added advantage over India, as they will get a second opportunity to boost their chances in the away series against Sri Lanka. So, considering the upcoming BGT Tests give India a final opportunity to keep themselves alive in the WTC final race, the visitors should regroup and avoid any further hiccup in the remainder of the series.
