IND vs SL | 1st Test: Ashwin, Jadeja rip through Sri Lankan batting unit as hosts take 1-0 lead

India thumped Sri Lanka by an innings and 222 runs in the first Test match of the series in Mohali after bundling out them for 178 in the second innings. The home side had enforced a follow-on after bowling out the Lankan Lions for 174 in the first innings in reply to India’s 574/8 (D).

The spinners R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja ripped through the Sri Lankan batting order as they shared a total of eight wickets out of the 10.

The visitors had a struggling start in the second innings as they lost early wickets and were reduced to 45/3 before Angelo Mathews and Dhanajaya de Silva tried to steady the ship and the two chipped in with a partnership of 49 runs. But De Silva’s dismissal for 30 was followed by a fall of wickets at regular intervals and the touring side was reduced to 153/8 before getting all out.

Niroshan Dickwella tried to hold the fort at one end as he remained unbeaten at 51 but his efforts went in vain. While Ashwin and Jadeja bagged four-for each, Mohammed Shami scalped a couple of wickets in the second innings.

During the course of the match, Ashwin also surpassed Kapil Dev to become the second highest wicket-taker for India in Tests while Jadeja returned with a total of 9 wickets in the match along with 175*.

The action will now move to Bengaluru for the second match scheduled to begin on March 12, 2022.

“Ravindra Jadeja has really come a long way in the last four-five years. I think his position is a little low for the way he is batting at the moment. His batting has gone one notch higher. He knows what he is doing and it reflects in the way he is batting,” Ashwin said after the match.

ICC Women's World Cup 2022 | INDW vs PAKW: India begin campaign with thumping win over Pakistan

India women’s team began the World Cup campaign on a positive note after thumping arch-rivals Pakistan by 107 runs in Mount Maunganui on Sunday. Chasing 245, Pakistan could only manage to get 137 on the board before getting bowled out in 43 overs. The Pakistan side never really got into the groove and lost wickets at regular intervals to get reduced to 113/8 before getting bundled out eventually. Rajeshwari Gayakwad rattled the Pakistan batting unit as she returned with a four-wicket haul for just 31 runs in 10 overs while experienced bowler Jhulan Goswami and Sneh Rana scalped a couple of wickets each. Sidra Ameen top-scored with 30 off 64 for Pakistan. Earlier, in the day, India lost an early wicket after Shafali Verma was cleaned up by Diana Baig for zero before Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma steadied the ship for the side with a partnership of 92 runs for the second wicket. But Deepti’s departure for 40 off 57 and Mandhana’s dismissal for 52 off 75 was followed by a quick fall of wickets as the Pakistan bowlers pushed India on the back foot. India were 114/6 when Pooja Vastrakar and Sneh Rana came in for the side’s rescue with a 122-run stand for the seventh wicket. While Rana remained unbeaten at 53 off 48, Vastrakar scored 67 in 59 balls to help India put 244/7 in 50 overs. “I'm very happy, my first player of the match award, in my first WC game. The plan was to somehow try and get to 200. I like to bat in pressure situations, even in domestics, I told the same to Sneh (Rana), to keep the partnership going,” Vastrakar said after the match.
