‘He was a bit cocky when he was a youngster’ - AB de Villiers on Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers share a very special bond. But many may not know how the seeds of their friendship were sown. The former Proteas batter re-winded the clock, opening up on his first meeting with Kohli.

Revealing on the RCB podcast, De Villiers shared that his first impression of Kohli was of a 'cocky person'. With Virat quite young at that time, his aggression and attitude was quite evident and did not remain hidden to the cricketing fraternity.

"We ran into each other a few times before we properly met. I knew about him, he knew about me. I said it a few times that I thought he was a bit cocky when he was a youngster, so that was my initial impression," De Villiers mentioned on the RCB podcast.

"Even though I could see that he has got respect and the basics are in place, I felt like he has got a bit of swagger going in. So, I didn’t hold it against him because you need it at that point of age. We had a really short discussion, I didn’t give him any compliments or anything like that. But, I remember clearly at Wanderers when I got picked up by RCB, and it was a nice discussion of looking forward to playing together," Mr.360 added.

As the South African joined the Bangalore-based franchise in 2011, his connection with Kohli instantly took off. The duo since then has smashed several records while batting with each other.

"Once I got to Bangalore, the connection just kicked off straight away. Our proper friendship started when I started playing for RCB in 2011. That’s probably when we started becoming good friends," the retired batsman quoted.

"I am kind of a guy where I don’t really keep in touch but for some reason with Virat, it just happens, so we stay in touch. It’s easy as he is on telly the whole time when I am at home. We both have a lot of basics in common. The way we play the game is quite similar. He is a fighter and I sort of relate to the way he plays the game and another fighter in the team, would have been great," he concluded.

While Virat has been a vital part of RCB since 2008, ABD joined the team in 2011. Fans will longer see their on-field partnership as de Villiers recently announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.

Lahore Qalandars snatched the game out of the jaws of defeat against Islamabad United on Saturday, 5 February. Down and out by the 15th over of the second innings when Islamabad United needed 39 runs from the last 5 overs with 8 wickets in hand, Qalandars struck back with their fast bowlers to eke out 2 crucial points. Defending 175 from 20 overs, Lahore had started fairly well by removing the dangerous Alex Hales and Paul Stirling, inside the powerplay overs. While they would have liked to build on the momentum, they were hit by a roadblock named Colin Munro who fought on despite his well known weakness against spin. He raked up 60 off 45 balls and combined with Shadab Khan’s 52 off 32 put Islamabad United in a great position to win the game. However, incredible bowling from Lahore in the final five overs of the game, turned the tide around and stifled Islamabad. They ended up losing the game by eight runs. The pressure was built by the duo of Haris Rauf and Shaheen Shah Afridi, whose mix of lengths between them worked up the batsmen. Needing 12 from the final over, Afridi had his arms around Zaman Khan for all of six balls and made sure that his bowler did not lose any confidence. Earlier in the day, Lahore Qalandars had a flying start owing to their opening combination of Fakhar Zaman and Abdullah Shafique. The duo showed their intent in the very first over going straight after Hasan Ali and depositing him for 17 overs. They carried the momentum from that over and ended up posting 73 runs at the end of the powerplay. However, Islamabad struck with 5 wickets in the next five overs, completely halting the momentum of Shaheen Afridi captained franchise. Shadab Khan was the wrecker in chief picking up four wickets in that phase of play. He dismissed the prized duo of Zaman and Shafique and then removed Mohammad Hafeez and Phil Salt in the 12th over. With the game stuck at 98/5 veteran David Wiese and young Harry Brook showed some resistance and their partnership of 51 runs off 32 balls was largely the reason behind Lahore managing to put something respectable on board. They would have gone on to score more if not for Waqas Maqsood’s triple wicket final over where he conceded just 7 runs and dismissed Brook, Afridi and Haris Rauf. With the win Lahore now have six points to their name from four matches while Islamabad have four points from their four games played.

India U19 team were off to a brilliant start against England U19 in the final of the World Cup after picking up three wickets inside 11 overs. England after winning the toss elected to bat first but were reduced to 18/2 in the 4th over. India white-ball skipper Rohit Sharma addressed the media ahead of the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies. Detailing what lies ahead of India in the limited-overs cricket, Rohit revealed his side's plan to target the upcoming T20 and ODI World Cup. When asked about captaincy Test cricket, Rohit dodged the question twice, saying that his focus currently lies on limited-overs cricket solely. "There's time for that. My focus is on limited-overs cricket. Workload management is important. We could lose a few series because we need to keep changing players, but we're ready for that. Forget Test captaincy for now. I have no idea for now. Like I said, there is the WI and SL series for now to focus on," the newly-crowned ODI captain said during the press conference. When asked about giving opportunities to youngsters in the top three, Rohit replied wittily as he said for that to happen, he and Dhawan would need to sit out from the playing XI. "You are saying I and Shikhar should sit on the bench and and give Ruturaj and Ishan chances at the top? The top 3 batters in Indian ODI team have done very well. Young batters will get opportunities. Ishan is getting one. There are a lot of matches. The ones who do well will get opportunities. Dhawan did well in SA but is now affected by Covid. Ishan is getting the opportunity now. After Rohit took the leadership baton from Virat Kohli, speculations were rife that the men in blue may come with a changed approach to the field in the ODIs. However, the 34-year-old batter again expressed that India will continue with the same template under his captaincy. "When Virat was the captain, I was the vice-captain. I just have to take it from where he left. Everybody knows what is expected out of them, we want to continue with the same template. There is not much we need to change. It is just that adaptability and being open to different things is what we have spoken of. It is not like I have to come in and change things drastically,” the opener quoted.
