In the latest development, the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) has revealed India’s ODI squad for the upcoming Australian tour. As expected, and reported earlier, Shubman Gill has replaced Rohit Sharma to become the new ODI skipper. Interestingly, Rohit will play as a pure batter, while Virat Kohli has also been included in the 15-member squad.
Shreyas Iyer will be Gill’s deputy and has become the new vice-captain of the side as India start their journey towards the World Cup in 2027.
India’s ODI squad for Australia tour
Shubman Gill (Captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (VC), Axar Patel, KL Rahul (WK), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal.
For starters, there were speculations that Gill would be appointed as the new captain, and the rumours came true as the new Test captain will succeed Rohit in the ODIs as well. He was long touted to become the successor in the 50-overs format, keeping in mind the 2027 World Cup in South Africa.
Also, there is no Jasprit Bumrah in the ODIs, while Hardik will not be available for the entire tour due to an injury he suffered before the Asia Cup final.
Last ODI series for Rohit, Kohli?
Even before the start of the series, there were reports that the team management is looking beyond both Rohit and Kohli, and the upcoming Australian tour could be the last dance for the Indian duo. Gautam Gambhir is planning for the 2027 World Cup, and reports suggest that he wants a young squad, with no place for the senior duo
However, there is no official confirmation regarding the same, but with Gill appointed as the new ODI captain despite Rohit’s stellar performances suggests that India might be heading towards a change.
