Former Bangladesh cricketer Mosharraf Hossain passes away due to cancer

In a shocking development, former Bangladesh cricketer Mosharraf Hossain Rubel has left for heavenly abode following a long battle with cancer at the age of 40 years.

The news was confirmed by his fellow cricketer Mohammad Sharif to news portal Risingbd.

Hossain was diagnosed with a brain tumour back in March 2019 and while he seemed to have recovered from the same following a long medical treatment, his tumour resurfaced in January 2021.

He was staying at his residence but was rushed to the hospital in Bangladesh’s capital city of Dhaka earlier today following a deterioration in his health and breathed his last at around 5 PM.

One of the most prolific wicket-takers in Bangladesh domestic cricket, Hossain, the left-arm orthodox, made his international debut for the Asian Tigers during an ODI series against South Africa in March 2008.

He played a total of 5 ODIs for  Bangladesh, with his last appearance coming against England at Mirpur in October 2016.

Hossain's international career was derailed due to his participation in the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL). Just like other cricketers who had joined the rebel league, Mosharraf was handed a 10-year-ban by the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

However, after Mosharraf and his fellow ICL mates quit the league in early 2010, he was once again allowed to play domestic cricket.

Hossain made his First-Class debut during the 2001/02 season and went on to feature in 112 games, in which he claimed as many as 392 wickets at an average of 29.03 with 19 five-wicket-hauls.

He also featured in 104 List-A and 56 Twenty20 matches, claiming 120 and 60 wickets at an average of 30.48 and 19.60 respectively. The left-hander also scored 3305 FC and 1792 List-A runs respectively.

The 40-year-old played his last competitive game in February 2019.
