In a move that may have left fans of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) stunned, former South African pacer Dale Steyn announced he would not be returning as the team’s bowling coach for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. Although Steyn won’t be gracing the IPL sidelines, he reassured fans of his continuing association with the franchise, confirming that he will still serve as a coach for the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 league.

Dale Steyn Steps Down as SRH Bowling Coach

“A big thank you to Sunrisers Hyderabad for my few years with them as bowling coach at the IPL, unfortunately, I won’t be returning for IPL 2025,” Steyn shared in a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter). “However, I will continue to work with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 here in South Africa.”

This statement marks the end of a notable chapter for Dale Steyn in Hyderabad’s dugout, where he was instrumental in developing a promising generation of pacers.

Umran Malik Development Under Steyn

Steyn's influence on SRH’s pace department was like a shot in the arm for budding talents, particularly the young pace sensation Umran Malik. Known for his raw pace, Malik flourished under Steyn’s watchful eye, evolving into a force to be reckoned with.

Steyn’s experience and mentorship helped Umran Malik harness his speed, turning him into a lethal weapon in the Sunrisers’ bowling arsenal.

During Steyn's tenure, SRH achieved a significant milestone, reaching the IPL 2024 final – their first since 2018. Although they ultimately fell to Kolkata Knight Riders, the journey to the final under head coach Daniel Vettori James Franklin, set a strong foundation for SRH’s renewed ambitions, both of whom are likely to be retained for the upcoming season.

A New Era on the Horizon for SRH’s Coaching Lineup

Steyn’s departure from SRH’s IPL setup marks a pivotal transition, opening the door for a fresh bowling coach while James Franklin continues in his new role. With Franklin and Vettori at the helm, SRH will aim to build on last season’s success, banking on their finely tuned retention strategy and emerging young talent to take them to the top.

As Steyn’s IPL journey with SRH comes to an end, his legacy remains entrenched in the team’s DNA – a fierce mentor who helped mould a new generation of pacers. For SRH, a new dawn is on the horizon, yet Steyn’s huge mark on the franchise will surely be felt for seasons to come.
