CSK planning to own a Women’s IPL team

Indian Premier League powerhouses Chennai Super Kings are eyeing a team in the women's edition of the tournament, which is slated to take place next year with a six-team event on the cards.

One of the tournament's most successful sides, CSK commands a massive fan following among all the franchises and has shown interest in owning a team in the Women's IPL.

CSK CEO Kasi Vishwanathan said, "Once the BCCI decides to have a women's IPL, we will be interested; we will take a call when it is offered.

"Look at the progress in Indian women's cricket after receiving recognition".

It is worth noting that MS Dhoni-led CSK has attracted many female fans around the globe, with Kate Cross and Alana King among them.

BCCI has already made plans to introduce a women's IPL team after voices started growing in favour of the tournament from different parts of the country.

BCCI, to lay a roadmap, has managed to run the Women's T20 Challenge, an annual domestic T20 competition held among two teams initially in 2018 and later with three teams in 2019, which is organised during IPL Playoffs every year except in 2021 when it was abandoned due to Covid-19.

Several senior players like Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur have been pushing the case for women's IPL for a long time, with many talents being unearthed through the Women's T20 Challenge. One such find was Shafali Verma, who was recognised during one of those matches.

BCCI, on the other hand, has defended itself for delaying the beginning of Women's IPL, citing a lack of talent pool in the women's domestic structure.

Recently, BCCI secretary Jay Shah stated that Women's IPL valuation would break all records after the success of the men's IPL edition in 2022.
