CSA T20 League | Lance Klusener to coach the RPSG-owned Durban franchise

The RPSG-owned Durban franchise has announced the appointment of former South African all-rounder Lance Klusener as their head coach for the inaugural edition of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) planned T20 League.

The 50-year-old has played 49 Tests and 171 ODIs for South Africa, establishing himself as one of the best all-rounders in world cricket back in the 90s.

Sanjiv Goenka-run RPSG also owns the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL), which finished third in their first season under coach Andy Flower.

"This is a new challenge for me. It makes me very proud. I am looking forward to meet the team," Klusener said in a statement released by RPSG.

Coaching credentials

Klusener has worked with international teams like South Africa, Afghanistan, and Zimbabwe.

He was the head coach of the Afghanistan national team between 2019 and 2021. It was in March 2022 that Klusener was re-appointed as Zimbabwe’s batting coach.

The left-handed batter has worked as a batting coach/consultant for franchises like Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals in the IPL.

He has coached sides like the Dolphins, Lyca Kovai Kings (TNPL), Rajshahi Kings (BPL), Glasgow Giants (Euro T20 Slam), and Khulna Tigers (BPL).

More about CSA T20 League

The CSA T20 League is scheduled to start in January 2023, with six teams participating in the franchise-based competition.

Interestingly, all six franchises were bought by IPL team owners, making it somewhat of a mini version of the cash-rich tournament.

Apart from RSPG, other IPL owners include Reliance Industries Limited (Cape Town), Sun TV Network Limited (Gqeberha), Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited (Johannesburg), Royals Sports Group (Paarl), and JSW Sports (Pretoria).
