County Championship 2022 | Advantage Yorkshire at the end of Day 2

With some excellent bowling spells and pristine batting, Yorkshire gained a dominant position against Northamptonshire at the end of the second day.

Northamptonshire resumed on their overnight score of 26/2, with Will Young and nightwatchman Matthew Kelly occupying the crease. However, the nightwatchman could not create much of an impact with the bat as he fell to Jordan Thompson.

Young was then joined in the middle by Emilio Gay. The duo steadied the ship for some time by adding 55 runs for the fourth wicket at a brisk rate. Then, however, Steven Patterson built up some pressure with tight bowling. And Matthew Revis cashed in, claiming two quick wickets. First, he castled Young on 33 and then had Saif Zaib caught behind.

Rob Keogh (21) tried to play second fiddle to Emilio, but Dominic Bess got the better of him. The scoreboard did not look promising for the home side when Luke Procter (38) came in. However, Procter was resilient to the core as he saw off a tricky phase with Emilio. The duo took the score from 115/6 to 164/7 before Bess sent Emilio back on 65.

Procter battled on, but Yorkshire’s bowlers combined to bundle out the opposition on 204, taking a significant first-innings lead of 92 runs. Jordan Thompson was the pick of the bowlers as he returned with four wickets. He was well-supported by Matthew Revis, who accounted for three of Northamptonshire’s batters.

In their second instalment, Yorkshire made their intentions clear. Openers Adam Lyth and Dimuth Karunaratne added some quick runs to increase the lead. The Sri Lankan Test skipper fell on 36 to Luke Procter. However, Adam Lyth (41*) and George Hill (3*) ensured that there was no further damage.
