ICC appoints Wasim Khan as General Manager - Cricket

The International Cricket Council has appointed former Pakistan Cricket Board’s managing director Wasim Khan as their next General Manager - Cricket. The 51-year-old will be replacing Geoff Allardice, who has served in the same role for eight years.

Khan is set to charge of his duties from next month. However, this role has been lying vacant since November as Allardice had been promoted to the chair of Chief Executing Officer.

Speaking about his new duties and responsibilities, Wasim stated, “I am honoured to be joining the ICC; I can’t wait to get started and work in partnership with our Members to strengthen and grow our sport.”

The 51-year old further commented on committing to work for the growth of women’s cricket. He stated, “I’m particularly excited by the ICC’s commitment to the growth of the women’s game, and I look forward to playing my part in really accelerating that growth over the next decade.”

While welcoming Wasim to his new position, Allardice cited, “He (Khan) brings an in-depth knowledge of our sport, and its stakeholders and his firsthand experience of the international cricket landscape will be of enormous benefit as we implement the ICC global growth strategy and move forward into a new events cycle.”

The new ICC General Manager is the first British-born Pakistani Muslim to play professional cricket in England. However, the player could never make it to the international cricket.

Success struck him when he took up a new role in cricket, which was management. He was critically acclaimed for his role as CEO of the Chance to Shine campaign.

In 2014, Wasim was appointed as the CEO of Leicestershire CCC before moving to Pakistan to take up the role of PCB’s managing director in 2018. However, he resigned from his post soon after the current PCB chairman Ramiz Raza’s appointment in September 2021.
