In latest reports, Rohit Sharma has been asked to convey his future plans to Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is concluded. India, are all set to head into their final stage of ODI preparation with the England series, where the two will lock horns for a three-match ODI series.
According to Times Of India: "TOI has learnt that the selectors are eager to set plans in motion for the 2027 ODI World Cup and start a transition process for Test cricket as well. They are keen to find a stable captaincy option in both formats. As for Virat Kohli, the selectors are willing to wait a bit more on his Test form, while his ODI prowess is not seen as a major problem."
Rohit's Age Factor A Big Concern
The 38-year-old opener faces uncertainty regarding his future with the Indian cricket team, especially after a tough Test season and limited ODI appearances post-2023 World Cup. The BCCI has reportedly had discussions with Rohit Sharma about planning for his future after the Champions Trophy.
"Bumrah’s chances of a long Test series or completing a full season will always be in doubt. The selectors may want a more stable option. Gill has been seen as a captaincy prospect but his returns in Test cricket have been average. Rishabh Pant could also be a strong candidate and maybe someone like Yashashvi Jaiswal can be groomed for the role," said a source.
The team management is focusing on a smooth transition, with fresh leadership options for the upcoming World Test Championship and ODI World Cup. Shubman Gill has been named vice-captain for the Champions Trophy, with Hardik Pandya also considered for the role. For Test captaincy, with Jasprit Bumrah's fitness uncertain, the selectors are likely to opt for a young leader to take India forward, potentially moving away from Rohit’s tenure.
