It was supposed to be just another high-stakes Dhaka Premier League clash but it turned out to be much more. The limelight, which should have been on Anisul Islam Emon’s classy ton and Ebadot Hossain’s brilliant spell, ended up on Towhid Hridoy, who let his emotions get the better of him in a tense face-off against Abahani Limited at the Shere Bangla Stadium in Mirpur.
Towhid Hridoy Cops One-Match Ban After Heated Umpire Spat In Dhaka Premier League
With Tamim Iqbal sidelined after a heart scare, Hridoy was handed the captain’s armband for Mohammedan Sporting Club. And while his team did the job on the field, racking up 264 and then defending it with ease, the young skipper found himself in hot water after a couple of umpiring decisions didn’t go his way.
The first flashpoint came early in Abahani’s chase. With the score on 44-2, Ebadot Hossain trapped Mohammed Mithun on the pads. The appeal? Loud and long. But umpire Tanvir Ahmed stood his ground. And that’s when things spiralled.
Towhid Hridoy wasn’t done even after the fielders settled back. He was still remonstrating with square-leg umpire Sharfuddoula Saikat, finger-wagging and visibly animated. Even Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz had to step in to calm things down.
This wasn’t the first time in the match Hridoy lost his cool. Just a couple of overs earlier, Parvez Hossain Emon survived an appeal off Mehidy’s bowling. Hridoy sprinted in from covers, clearly unhappy. He seemed to shout something at the umpire with frustration was written all over his face.
One-Match Suspension Handed Out
While Mohammedan won the game by 39 runs, thanks to Ebadot’s 4-36, Hridoy was slapped with a one-match suspension after the game. It was a Level 2 offence for showing dissent at an umpire’s decision. The league didn’t waste time pulling the trigger.
After the dust settled, Hridoy spoke out. “I can’t explain everything that happened,” he said.
“But a lot of things happened in the heat of the moment. They also make mistakes. But I believe mistakes should be admitted. If I make a mistake, I’ll own up. But if you make one and say you didn’t, I won’t have it.”
He added, “We respect the three international umpires. But we’re international cricketers too. In matches like these, one or two decisions can change everything.”
With Hridoy suspended, Mohammedan will have to name a new skipper for their next outing which just happens to be the first match of the Super League phase. It’s a crucial time, and losing their stand-in captain is a blow they didn’t need.
