Aminul Islam Bulbul has been elected as the full-term president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), officially transitioning from his interim role after the new board of directors unanimously chose him to lead. The election solidifies his position at the helm of the country's cricket administration following a period of significant turmoil.
His re-election marks a new chapter for the BCB, which has been seeking stability after the controversial removal of former president Faruque Ahmed.
Aminul's path from interim to permanent leadership
Aminul Islam was first appointed as the BCB president on May 30, 2025, in an interim capacity. Aminul Islam's initial appointment as interim president was a direct response to a major administrative crisis. His predecessor, Faruque Ahmed, was removed after the government withdrew his nominated directorship.
The move came after eight of the nine BCB directors tabled a no-confidence motion against Faruque. They cited serious allegations of mismanagement, including his unilateral decision to fire head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe without consulting the board.
The final straw was the handling of the 2025 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), which was marred by the Durbar Rajshahi franchise failing to pay its players and hotel bills, leading to a player revolt and government intervention.
Why the Board chose Aminul for a full term?
The newly elected board of directors, convening on October 6, saw continuity and stability as paramount. Aminul Islam's brief interim period was viewed as a success in calming the political and administrative storms that had engulfed the BCB.
His primary task was to oversee a credible election process. Despite the election being marred by controversy, with several candidates withdrawing over transparency concerns, Aminul successfully navigated the board to this point.
His crisis management during the fallout from the BPL scandal and his steady hand during the transition period were likely key factors in his re-election.
With his position now confirmed, the focus for President Aminul Islam will shift from managing an internal crisis to steering Bangladeshi cricket forward, with the full authority of a democratically elected board behind him.
