Babar Azam, once hailed as the backbone of Pakistan’s batting lineup, is reportedly set to be dropped from the squad for the upcoming second Test against England, beginning on October 15 in Multan. This surprising decision comes in the wake of Pakistan's crushing defeat by an innings and 47 runs in the first Test. According to Cricinfo, the new selection committee made this choice following a thorough discussion shortly after the disappointing loss.

The newly formed selection committee met in Lahore just hours after Pakistan's heavy defeat. With high hopes shattered, the committee, led by chairman Mohsin Naqvi and comprising five recently appointed mentors, felt it was time for a significant shake-up. Babar Azam’s exclusion stands out as the most notable change, reflecting the committee's push for fresh talent and performance. Despite Babar’s illustrious career, his form has waned, and he hasn’t managed to score a Test half-century since December 2022.

Shan Masood Defends Babar Azam After The Defeat

Following the defeat, Pakistan’s captain Shan Masood publicly defended Babar, labeling him "Pakistan's best batter." Shan emphasized the need for stability and time for players to regain their form, a sentiment echoed by Test coach Jason Gillespie.

"We want to build a squad mentality. We don't play a lot of Test cricket. Especially as a batter, it is not easy. You have to give a lot of opportunities, and there is no doubt that Babar Azam is Pakistan's best batter. You always have to keep in mind that your best batter is just one game away. We will reflect and see the conditions that will be on offer. We will try to put the best team on the side," Masood said.

The new selection panel includes former cricketers and a former ICC umpire, demonstrating a blend of experience and fresh viewpoints. Although some committee members favoured retaining Babar in the squad, the majority concluded that change was necessary. Their discussions on Saturday included not only the captain and coach but also the PCB curator, indicating a comprehensive approach to team selection.
