Amelia Kerr tests positive for COVID-19 ahead of Commonwealth Games

The promising New Zealand all-rounder Amelia Kerr has tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022

Kerr returned positive for COVID-19 in the Rapid Antigen Test, following which she was isolated from the squad. As per reports, she will undergo a period of hotel isolation before rejoining her teammates.

Fortunately, the 21-year-old is the only player from the 15-member touring party to be infected by the deadly virus. However, her unavailability has adversely affected the preparations of the white ferns.

Notably, New Zealand - who preferred youngsters like Eden Carson, Isabella Gaze, Fran Jonas and Georgia Plimmer heading into the tournament - will miss the services of Amy Satterthwaite, Katey Martin, Frankie Mackay and Leigh Kasperek.

While Satterthwaite and Martin have retired from international cricket, Mackay and Kasperek were not picked in the squad following the non-renewal of the central contracts.

However, the White Ferns are empowered by the presence of experienced campaigners like Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine. These veteran players are expected to guide the Kiwis to the doors of victory in the mega event.

New Zealand are scheduled to play two warm-up matches against England A before moving to Birmingham to participate in the showpiece event.
