Cricket Australia on Wednesday, January 12 announced a 15-player squad for the Women’s Ashes beginning January 20, 2022. The Squad includes only one new entrant in form of leg spinner Alana King who could find herself in the squad courtesy of her consistent performances over the years.
King’s entry was also made possible because two of Australia’s main spinning options in Georgia Wareham and Sophie Molineux miss this series due to injuries. Along with the main squad, an ‘A’ squad was also announced which will face England A in a series running parallel to the Ashes.
Youngsters Georgia Redmayne, Stella Campbell, Maitlan Brown and Molly Strano who couldn’t retain themselves in the main squad due to decreased size of the squad, find themselves in the A squad.
Unlike Men’s Ashes, the Women’s Ashes comprise of one Test, three ODIs and three T20Is. Each win in limited-overs games earn the side two points while a victory in the Test match is worth four points and at the end of the seven matches, whichever team has maximum points is declared the winner.
The series begins with three T20Is at the Adelaide Oval starting January 20. Then the caravan would move to Manuka Oval in Canberra where the lone Test match would be played from January 27 to 31. This venue will also host the first ODI, a day-night clash on February 3. Melbourne's Junction Oval will host the second and third ODIs on February 6 and 8 respectively.
