Afghanistan Lodge Complaint to ACC Over NRR Miscalculation in Asia Cup 2023

The Asia Cup 2023 match between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka was marked by controversy. The Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side was not aware of their Net Run Rate (NRR) scenarios, which saw them missing out on the spot in the Super 4 stage as they lost their high-stakes encounter against Sri Lanka by just two runs.

Right after the game, Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott spilled the beans, saying they had zero clue about the whole net run rate thing, and nobody bothered to fill them in. Here's what Trott said:

“We were never communicated those calculations. All we were communicated was we needed to win in 37.1 overs. We were not told what the overs in which we could get 295 or 297, That we could win in 38.1 overs was never communicated to us."

Surprisingly, the Asian Cricket Council refrained from commenting on the matter. As it stands, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has taken this matter seriously and lodged a formal complaint regarding the substantial NRR calculation issue with the governing body.

As far as the match is concerned, Sri Lanka managed to accumulate 291 runs while losing eight wickets within their allotted 50 overs when they batted first. In response, Sri Lanka began strongly as they quickly claimed three wickets. However, Hashmatullah Shahidi and Mohammad Nabi stepped up to salvage Afghanistan's innings.

The duo put on an 80-run partnership for the fifth wicket that completely shifted the dynamics of the game. However, after their departures, wickets continued to fall regularly, and despite their extraordinary contributions, the Afghanistan team fell two runs short of the target.
