ACC mulling over new dates for Asia Cup 2022 after Sri Lanka's proposal

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board have recommended the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) to change the dates of the Asia Cup 2022.

As per a report of The News, Sri Lanka has proposed an early start of the Asia Cup 2022. The tournament was planned to commence on August 27, but it could now start as early as August 24 and will run till September 7.

Two of the participating teams, including Pakistan, approached the Sri Lankan board for the change of dates. After which, the host nation sought ACC's approval for the same.

"Adjustments in the dates are made following a request from the SL Board from a couple of participating teams, including Pakistan, on the possible clash of international fixtures. Pakistan is to host England for seven T20 Internationals in the latter part of September," a source said as quoted to The News.

Pakistan are scheduled to face England in a T20I series immediately after the Asia Cup. If the proposal is given a green signal, then the Pakistani team will have ample time to prepare for the England T20Is.

"If Asia Cup goes ahead on the new dates of August 24 and ends on September 7, it would be perfect dates from Pakistan's perspective as the team will be back home well in time for the start of the T20 series against England," the source added.

Asia Cup 2022 will be a six-team competition and will be played in the T20 format this time around. Given the political tension in Sri Lanka, the event may be shifted to the UAE. But the host board is still pretty optimistic about planning the tournament in the country itself.

India will head to the tournament as the defending champions as they won the competition in 2018.

Pakistan makes me feel at home, says T20 WC winning captain Daren Sammy after receiving 'Sitara-I-Pakistan'

The Pakistan government has recognized former West Indies skipper Daren Sammy for his dedication to the sport in spreading cricket across their country. Sammy has been associated with the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Peshawar Zalmi (PZ) since its inaugural season in 2016. The Saint Lucia-born enabled West Indies to win the 2012 and 2016 T20 World Cup despite his infighting with board officials, which saw his place from the side taken away after winning the coveted trophy. Sammy took to social media to share the news and thanked the Pakistani government and the people for their esteemed honour. "Cricket took me all over the world enabling me to see and play in some amazing places. Pakistan is definitely one of these places. A place that always makes me feel at home. It's such an honour to have received this prestigious award (Sitara-I-Pakistan) from the Government and people of Pakistan. Thank you," his Instagram post read. Sammy, who captained Zalmi in the second edition, helped them win their only title in 2017. He was also their head coach for two years after retiring as a player. Sammy was instrumental in bringing international cricket back to Pakistan and was awarded the second-highest civilian medal by Pakistan. Nishan-e-Pakistan, in 2020. Apart from that, the all-rounder was given honorary Pakistani citizenship. Sammy has also received the Order of the British Empire (OBE) from Queen Elizabeth II. Sammy, who was the first player from St. Lucia to play international cricket, has represented the Caribbean nation in 38 Tests, 126 ODIs, and 68 T20Is. Last year, Sammy was named as an independent non-member director on the board for Cricket West Indies (CWI). He has played in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for franchises like Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings).
