Last chance for Rohit Sharma? 3 IND stars who should face litmus Test during Australia tour

On Saturday, October 4, the BCCI announced India's squads for the upcoming ODI and T20I series in Australia, starting on October 19. A debate erupted soon after the board decided to appoint Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma.

Additionally, the inclusion of Harshit Rana and the exclusion of Sanju Samson from the ODI squad also raised concerns. Nonetheless, the squad is hinting at India's plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup and 2026 T20 World Cup.

If such is the case, then India does have players who are still struggling, and the upcoming series is a do-or-die tour for them and this article will shed light on these cricketers.

1. Harshit Rana

The right-arm seamer's inclusion in India's ODI and T20I plans has created a stir on social media as the fans are upset with Gambhir and have also labelled Rana's inclusion as favouritism in the team.

Even Rana's stats don't back his inclusion in the Indian team over the likes of someone like Khaleel Ahmed or Anshul Kamboj.

The key takeways from his stats is that Rana has played just three T20Is and can boast only five wickets. Further, he bowls with an economy of 10.18, which is highly concerning for a player in the shortest format of the game.

Rana boasts a decent stat in ODIs, but faces a daunting task of performing in Australia series. Otherwise, it could be the end of his constant selection in the Indian team.

2. Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill has been appointed the new India captain in ODIs and rightly so. However, the 26-year-old, who is Suryakumar Yadav's deputy in the shortest format of the game, is struggling to score runs in T20Is. His selection for Asia Cup 2025 raised questions and now selection for Australia T20Is despite recent failure, has further raised eyebrows.

Notably, Gill only managed to score 127 runs in seven innings, averaging just 21.17. The gamble to demote Samson down the order and bring Gill to bat up failed miserably and another flop show that too in Australia, would force the selectors to seriously rethink over Shubman's selection in the team.

3. Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma, who will go down in history as one of the best ODI batters, has seen a dip in his performance in the fifty-over game. The hitman stole the limelight during the 2023 World Cup campaign, where he beautifully adopted a new brand of cricket and provided a platform for the Men in Blue by taking on the bowlers in the first powerplay.

However, in the last two years, the average has dipped, and so have Rohit's quick fire cameos. Notably, comparing Rohit's 2024 and 2025 seasons, the hitman saw an average of just 37 in 2025, and his strike-rate too just dipped to 108.

Also, with Gill becoming the new ODI captain, then Rohit's chances further look bleak and a bad series will end his India future.
