Recently, Rohit Sharma-led India defeated South Africa in a thrilling final to clinch their second World T20 title. Following the Men in Blue's victorious T20 World Cup campaign, legendary batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma hung up their boots from the shortest format. 

Ace all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja followed the legendary duo's footsteps, announcing his T20I retirement a day later. While these three players won't play the format anymore, there are several big names who have negligible chances of getting picked for T20Is. 

So, as India prepare for their upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe, here are five players who we might not see in the format anymore. 


KL Rahul

Once regarded as India's first-choice T20I opener, KL Rahul lost his place in the national T20 side following his successive poor World Cup campaigns in 2021 and 2022. 

Despite being capable of scoring all around the park, Rahul's timid approach eventually cost him his place in T20Is. 

Also, he will unlikely make a comeback, as the Indian think tank has already moved on from him in a bid to form a more dynamic top-order comprising Jaiswal, Gill and Abhishek Sharma.

Swashbuckling southpaw Ishan Kishan was left out of the BCCI central contracts after he didn't participate in the Ranji Trophy 2023-24. Since then, he hasn't played a single match for team India across formats. 

With the likes of Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson cementing their places in the T20I squad, Ishan is unlikely to make his comeback in the shortest format. 

Even when Samson was unavailable, the selectors picked Jitesh Sharma as his backup for the Zimbabwe tour. In such a scenario, it doesn't seem Ishan will regain his place anytime soon. 


Shreyas Iyer

Just like Ishan, Mumbai batter Shreyas Iyer also lost his BCCI central contract earlier this year. Despite leading Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title, Iyer was ignored for the Zimbabwe T20Is, with India appointing Shubman Gill as their captain. 

So, despite having an impressive IPL stint, a T20I renaissance currently seems a distant dream for Iyer, who played his final game in the shortest format in December last year. 


Yuzvendra Chahal

Despite being India's highest wicket-taker in T20Is, Yuzvendra Chahal hasn't played a T20 World Cup match. 

The wily spinner was included in India's squad for the recently-concluded World Cup, but couldn't feature in a single match. 

Considering Kuldeep Yadav leads the Indian spin department, with Ravi Bishnoi being his deputy, Chahal's T20I career seems all but over. 


Mohammed Shami

Prominent pacer Mohammed Shami was one of the top performers for India in the 2023 World Cup, powering them to the final of the competition. However, Shami hasn't lived up to the expectations in T20Is, managing 24 wickets at an abysmal economy rate of 8.94. 

So, given he is almost 34 and India has much more potent weapons in Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj, Shami has probably played his final T20I match.
