IPL 2025: 3 Teams That Might Target Joe Root In Mega Auction

The mega auction for IPL 2025 is just around the corner and the buzz around the event is increasing with each passing day. The retention list and other rules that will shape the structure teams in the next year are also out, and there are plenty of debates going around in cricketing circles. The young players like Nitish Reddy, Harry Brook are are grabbing lot of eyeballs with their stellar performance while Joe Root, the experienced and legendary English batter has also thrown his hat in the ring by consistent scores in 2024.

He has scored his runs in Test format, but it has come at a good pace and he can be a perfect anchor in many IPL teams with his ability to mould the game according to the situation.  Root was previously part of Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2023, but opted out of the 2024 season and if he makes himself available, he could find a buyer again given his world-class skills and experience.

Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings, the five-time IPL champions are known to back experienced cricketers and produce amazing results from them. They opted for Ajinkya Rahane in the 2023 season and he delivered big time, playing some impactful knocks after every other team ignored the experienced batter in the auction. So, Joe Root seems to be a perfect fit in CSK and could bat at number 3 for the franchise in the next season and provide the stability and consistency that the franchise has always preferred from their number 3 batter.

Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings have been the perennial underachievers of IPL and have never won an IPL trophy. They have brought in Ricky Ponting as the head coach ahead of mega auction and we can expect the Aussie to come up with some shrewd tactics for the next season. In this context, Joe Root can be an interesting choice as he would not come at a high price and would provide the stability and experience to the Punjab batting order that they missed in the last few seasons.

Punjab also have the tendency of buying the players who have performed well in the lead-up to the auction. So, with Root scoring tons of runs in recent times, Punjab Kings might well take bet on the experienced star.

Gujarat Titans

Gujarat Titans won their inaugural edition of IPL, but they struggled without Hardik Pandya in the 2024 season. Their batting faltered and the franchise chopped and changed a lot in a bid to find a settled batter. They had Williamson in their squad, but the batter could not make much of an impact and if GT try to look a player with similar skillset in the upcoming auction, Joe Root can be a good choice.

Root also has a better average and strike-rate in T20Is than Williamson, so he could be an ideal replacement of Williamson.
