India enter their toughest clash of the ICC World Cup 2023 on Sunday (November 5) when they face off against the in-form South Africans at the beautiful Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Men In Blue take on the Proteas with the numero uno standing in the points table up for stake after resounding success for two sides earlier in the tournament.

Rohit Sharma's men have played an excellent brand of cricket in winning their previous seven league stage clashes on the bounce, including a muscle-flexing win by 303 runs by dismissing the hapless Lankan Lions for an embarrassing 55 all-out to underline their 'tournament favourites' status.

For Proteas, it's an opportunity to push aside the mighty tournament hosts and raise their stocks multifold as the title contenders. They've been on a roll, surpassing most of their oppositions with ease in a highly impressive campaign featuring six victories in seven matches, with the only blip coming up against the Netherlands.

India vs South Africa Head-to-Head Record in ODIs

Ever since South Africa's historic return series to the international stage in the post-apartheid world back in 1991, they've posed a major hurdle to the Indians in One-Day Internationals. One that Team India has struggled to overcome on more occasions than not.

Proteas remain one of the rare top-level forces with a better win/loss record against two-time world champions India. They've defeated Men in Blue in 50 ODIs, losing 37 of the remaining 40 matches.

India vs South Africa Head-to-Head Record in ODI World Cups

In the World Cup history as well, it's the South Africans, who have managed to retain wood over India, albeit without as decisive a margin. Until the 2011 edition of the World Cup, Proteas had kept a 3-0 winning streak over India.

The momentum swung the other way from the 2015 iteration when India defeated their bogey side for the first time at MCG and suppressed their threat in Southampton when the two teams played in the 2019 World Cup.

South Africa have tended to give India the hardest time even in Indian conditions over the years. The Proteas have ran the Men in Blue close even in their den, losing 17 but also winning 14 of the 31 One-Day International matches that the two nations have collided in.
