The inevitable happened as Kolkata Knight Riders lost yet another IPL 2025 match and this time against GT at their own backyard, Eden Gardens. Throughout the tournament the team selection has come under scrutiny and against GT, KKR produced an embarrassing show to lose the match by 39 runs.

With this loss, KKR have lost 5 matches out of 8 played and now the question arises in every KKR fan's minds, how can the defending champions still qualify for IPL 2025 playoffs?.

KKR IPL 2025 playoff qualification scenario explained

  • KKR have played 8 matches and have lost 5 of them, meaning, they can only afford to lose one more game in the entire competition.
  • Out of the 6 matches remaining, they need to win at-least 5 of them, which will take their points tally to 16, but since KKR's net run-rate is poor, even 16 points might not be enough to secure a place in the knockouts. But to be on the safer side, KKR need to win 5 out of remaining 6.
  • If KKR lose another game and go onto win 4 matches, there points at the end of the league will be 14, which certainly will rule out of the IPL 2025 playoff qualification race. Hence, to secure their place, the Knight Riders at-least need 16 points.

What happened during KKR Vs GT Match?

GT batted first and the ever-reliable duo of Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill added 114 for the opening wicket with both the batters reaching their respective half-centuries. Gill scored a terrific 90 and Jos Buttler provided the finishing touches as GT posted 198/3.

In reply, KKR were never really in the hunt as they lost wickets at regular intervals and lost their 5th contest of the tournament.
