Why Iyer should drop Maxwell [Source: AP Photo]
The 34th match of the Indian Premier League will feature a riveting battle as the Royal Challengers Bengaluru will collide against the high-flying Punjab Kings squad at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The contest will have two fiery teams going toe-to-toe against each other.
The IPL match will also mark the return of Glenn Maxwell back against his former team RCB, but there is a good chance that he might not play the match. The all-rounder has been woeful since joining Punjab Kings and skipper Shreyas Iyer has 3 reasons to drop him for the match.
1) Poor form in IPL 2025
Punjab Kings spent a lot of money on buying back Glenn Maxwell in the iPL mega auction but the decision to purchase him turned into a nightmare as the numbers have been poor and Maxwell has looked a pale shadow of his former self.
Criterion | Data |
Matches | 6 |
Runs | 41 |
Average | 8.20 |
Strike rate | 100.00 |
(Maxwell numbers in IPL 2025)
As the stats say, in 6 matches, he only has racked up 41 runs, with an average of 8.20 and a strike rate touching just 100. These are not good numbers for a quality all-rounder and Shreyas Iyer probably needs to take a harsh call judging by the stats produced this season.
2) No match-winning contribution since 2024
The last time Maxwell played match-winning knocks in the IPL was during the 2023 season for RCB, and since then, the output has been almost zero. Last season he was dropped from the team mid-way and was replaced by Will Jacks as he was trolled, and this season, the breaking point is set to arrive and the overall numbers tells the story.
Criterion | Data |
Matches | 10 |
Runs | 52 |
Average | 5.78 |
Strike-rate | 120.93 |
(His numbers in 2024 edition)
These are last season's numbers and even there, he had only 52 runs in 10 matches, with a strike-rate barely crossing 120.
3) Replacements already ready
Punjab already have Marcus Stoinis in the team who can be a like-to-like option for Maxwell and is an excellent pace hitter. Also, in the last match, Josh Inglis was included in the team and Punjab already have two excellent players who can fill in his shoes.
Inglis can easily bat in the top-4, while Stoinis can act as a finisher, and hence, these two can easily replace the out of form all-rounder in PBKS side.
