The Australian management has announced the squad for their last ODI series before the Champions Trophy 2025. This will be their preparatory ground for the ODI World Champions for the grand event early next year.

Here is a look at the Australian squad for the Pakistan ODI series -

Two big names in Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh are missing from this squad. These two players are away on paternity leaves and hence will not be playing a part against Pakistan. Besides this major change, there are a few things that this squad reveals about how Australia are planning for the Champions Trophy.

3. Stress on utility players

The squad has a plethora of all-rounders. Players like Aaron Hardie, Sean Abbott, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and Pat Cummins himself can contribute effectively with both the bat and the ball. This shows that Australia is trying to groom players who can useful to the team's cause in more ways than one. The fact that recently, Marnus Labuschagne was also seen shunning his bowling skills points to the fact that the message from the management might be the stress on multidimensional players.

2. Adding flexibilty to the line-up

Besides looking for multidimensional players, the Australian squad indicates an increased importance for players who can bat at any position and adjust their games as per the demand of the match. While players like Steve Smith and Marnus Labushcagne can provide solidity to the batting order at the top middle-order, Aaron Hardie, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Josh Inglis, and Matt Short can be used anywhere in the line-up as per the demands of the situation.

1. Aggressive and positive intent at the top

The absence of Travis Head from the Pakistan ODI series has practically converted it into audition ground. The management will use this opportunity to look for an able opening partner of Travis Head for the Champions Trophy. The two players who will be competing for the spot are - Jake Fraser-McGurk and Matt Short. Both McGurk and Short have earned the reputation for being destructive and aggressive at the top. This shows that Australia is planning to put together an aggressive duo at the top of their order, who can put the oppositions on the back foot early in a match.
