'When No One Else is There...': Mohammed Siraj on Spearheading Indian Bowling Attack After Career Best 5-60

Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj relished the opportunity to spearhead the team's bowling attack, stepping up to take charge in the absence of senior pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami.

Siraj reveals his thoughts on leading India's pace attack

Delivering a match-defining performance during the first innings of the second Test against West Indies in Trinidad, he registered his career-best Test figures of 5/60 on Day 4, Sunday.

The Caribbean team's second innings was a spectacle of disappointment after an impressive show the previous day. From a comfortable overnight position of 229/5, they collapsed dramatically, as they threw in the towel by adding just 26 runs to be all out for 255. Siraj was the chief architect of this collapse, scalping four out of the five wickets that fell.

Following the spectacular bowling spell, the 29-year-old pacer was asked about his feelings on leading the Indian pace battery in the absence of his senior colleagues.

Siraj expressed that he genuinely enjoys the positive emotions that come with being entrusted with additional responsibilities. He finds it to be an uplifting experience as it presents a chance to take on new challenges. The bowler reckoned that he embraces the opportunity to step up as these challenges bring him a great sense of satisfaction.

"To be honest, I feel really good when you are given an extra responsibility. It's a great feeling and it's a challenge too. When no one else is there, I have to get on the ground and show some responsibility. I like accepting this challenge,” said Siraj.

Meanwhile, after wrapping up the West Indian innings quickly on Day 4, India declared their second innings at 181/2 which they scored in just 24 overs. They set a challenging target of 365 for the West Indies.

Striking early blows, the Indian bowlers successfully reduced the home team to 76/2 by the end of the day's play. Siraj will look to replicate his performance from the first innings and help India whitewash the hosts.
