On Monday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named a strong 17-man Team India squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023, following which social media went ablaze about several dubious selections.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar recalled the likes of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Jasprit Bumrah back from an injury layoff, while stating that the Lucknow Super Giants skipper is still suffering a niggle, but is hopeful of getting fit for the tournament.

Former India player Madan Lal has expressed his displeasure over the selection of Rahul and Iyer. The 1983 World Cup winner speaking to India Today, stated that both the selectors and team management is not sure about Rahul's fitness, while Iyer's remains untested for match fitness.

Lal questions KL Rahul & Iyer's inclusion

"I don't think the selectors and team management are still sure whether KL Rahul is fit or not. What injury or niggle? They should have specified that. They have kept Shreyas Iyer. There's still no surety about his fitness. They haven't played any competitive cricket. They should have been picked after they had proved their match fitness. Batting in the nets and batting in the middle are two different things."

Lal further quizzed Yuzvendra Chahal's exclusion from the squad, who the pacer believes is a match winner.

Meanwhile, Agarkar has backed Rahul, who is expected to be fit for the second or third Asia Cup match. The Asia Cup 2023 gets underway from August 30, with India taking on Pakistan in their first-match on September 2.
