Chennai Super Kings (CSK) crashed to a 27-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at M Chinnaswamy in Match 68 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. The outcome also marked CSK’s exit from the tournament’s playoffs race as their defeat margin exceeded the 18-run limit.

Despite failing to qualify for the playoffs, CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad expressed his contentment over a “memorable season”, and said that he was happy with team’s seven wins from 14 games in an injury-marred year.

While speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad said that the playing conditions on offer in Bengaluru made it difficult for his spinners to bowl, and also added that his batting line-up faltered by losing regular wickets in a challenging run-chase.

Gaikwad further claimed he was still happy with his bowler’s effort even though RCB charted 218 upfront. He thanked the CSK support staff for a “memorable season”, considering they shaped their team amidst numerous player injuries.

“Difficult for spinners as it was turning and gripping. We kept losing wickets at regular intervals and it was a matter of one or two hits. It happens. Pretty happy with what the target was. Happy with 7 wins out of 14, we had few injury and missing out key players. It made a huge difference but thanks to the staff for making it a memorable season. Challenges right from 1st game. Injury to Pathirana and then injury to Fizz and when you have injuries it becomes difficult to pick sides. Pretty much happy with the way things went.”

Ruturaj Gaikwad was appointed as CSK skipper a couple of days prior to the launch of IPL 2024 season after five-time winner MS Dhoni decided to step down from the high-profile role.

CSK’s 27-run defeat ensured that they finished at number five on the IPL 2024 points table, i.e., just below RCB’s slightly superior net run-rate.
