Sourav Ganguly has extended his support for batting veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to turn up for Team India in this year’s 2024 T20 World Cup.

Notably, both Kohli and Sharma have not featured in a single T20I for India since the conclusion of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, and will likely be making their respective returns through India’s upcoming home series against the visiting Afghanistan side.

Ganguly backs Kohli, Sharma for T20 World Cup 2024

Sourav Ganguly believes Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should play for Team India at the 2024 T20 World Cup, despite their year-long absence from the format. The former Indian captain praised Kohli and described him as an “outstanding player”, and even backed Sharma to lead the side in the multi-nation T20 tournament this year in the West Indies.

While speaking with RevSportz, Ganguly said: “Virat Kohli is an outstanding player - he should be part of the T20I for India. Rohit Sharma should be the captain in the T20I World Cup.”

Team India will be facing Afghanistan in a three-match T20I series at home in January, which itself serves as their final set of international white-ball fixtures prior to the T20 World Cup 2024 in June.

Several reports indicate that the Indian selection committee will be giving Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli a crack at T20Is through the Afghanistan series as part of their dress rehearsals before the main event. The two cricketers will also be representing their respective franchises in IPL 2024 on their road towards the World Cup in the West Indies and in the United States.

Back in November and December, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma had distanced themselves from India’s T20I series against Australia and South Africa.

Meanwhile, the T20 World Cup 2024, India’s next big-ticket ICC event, is set to be played in the West Indies and in the United States in June, i.e., after the conclusion of the IPL 2024 season.
