The Rajasthan Royals’ dismal IPL 2025 campaign hit a new low with a fifth consecutive defeat, a narrow 11-run loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The team’s struggles under head coach Rahul Dravid have drawn sharp criticism, particularly from Indian cricket icon Sunil Gavaskar, who questioned their tactical approach.

Once considered playoff contenders, RR now languish in eighth place with just two wins from nine matches, their inability to close tight games exposing a lack of strategic clarity.

Gavaskar Questions Dravid as Royals' Playoff Hopes Vanish

Gavaskar’s bafflement stems from Rahul Dravid’s reputation for meticulous planning, raising concerns over the disconnect between coaching philosophy and on-field execution.

RR’s recurring collapse in high-pressure chases has defined their season, including a Super Over heartbreak against Delhi Capitals and a two-run defeat to Lucknow Super Giants. Sunil Gavaskar did not mince words during his analysis of Rajasthan Royals' woes on Star Sports.

“With someone like Rahul Dravid as the coach, it was quite baffling—it was unthinking cricket. Dravid was always so precise in his thinking, and I would’ve thought that kind of approach would’ve seeped into some of the Rajasthan batters,” Gavaskar stated.

Sunil Gavaskar further criticised the team’s decision-making under pressure. He also called it a different kind of cricket commenting on Royals' setup.

“Where is the thought process there? You can’t expect inexperienced players to always get it right, but still... it’s just a different kind of cricket,” Gavaskar concluded.

The Royals’ batting unit, despite flashes of promise, has crumbled consistently in decisive phases. Gavaskar’s remarks highlight a systemic issue rather than individual failures, pointing to a lack of adaptability and composure.

With their playoff destiny out of their hands, RR’s final fixtures in the second leg of the tournament serve as a litmus test for Dravid’s coaching legacy and the team’s ability to rebuild ahead of the next season.
