Team India defeated Pakistan by five wickets in the final of the 2025 Asia Cup in Dubai. However, in a bizarre twist, the Indian team celebrated their victory without a trophy to show for at the winner’s podium during the post-match presentation ceremony.
Citing the severing geo-political tensions between India and Pakistan, the Indian players had refused to accept the trophy from ACC President and Pakistan’s interior minister Mohsin Naqvi. After delaying the presentation by nearly an hour, Naqvi walked out of the field with the trophy and winning medals as he refused to get off the stage.
Suryakumar Yadav trolls Mohsin Naqvi
Upon returning to India, winning captain Suryakumar Yadav summed up the bizarre presentation ceremony unfolded in Dubai after the thrilling Asia Cup 2025 final. While speaking with the Indian Express, the cricketer said that the Indian team did not sit inside the dressing room and did not make anyone wait at the time of the ceremony.
Instead, Suryakumar Yadav threw blame at ACC President Mohsin Naqvi, alleging the latter to have “run away with the trophy”. Compatible to Suryakumar’s claims, the Indian team was on the field at the time of the presentation ceremony, as captured by cameras and footage shared on social media. The Indian T20I skipper said:
“We didn’t close the door and sit inside the dressing room. We didn’t make anyone wait for the presentation ceremony. Trophy leke bhaag gaye woh (They ran away with the trophy). That’s what I saw. I don’t know, some people were making a video of us, but we were standing. We didn’t go inside.”
The BCCI has already lodged a formal complaint against Mohsin Naqvi for keeping the Asia Cup winning medals and trophy as his “personal property”.
The heightened cross-border tensions and severing diplomatic ties between India and Pakistan has embroiled on to the cricket field, as seen throughout the 2025 Asia Cup. Even prior to the final, both India and Pakistan captains refused to shake hands with each other and did not engage in conversations with commentator from the rival nation.
