Indian cricket is welcoming its new age. The appointment of Gautam Gambhir as the Head Coach of India is the first step towards the transition.

The first assignment of Gautam Gambhir is a white-ball tour to Sri Lanka. Today, on 22nd July Gambhir is having his first press conference as the Coach of India along with Ajit Agarkar chief selector.

The squads for the Sri Lankan tour have already been announced. The T20I captaincy  has been given to Suryakumar Yadav for the tour. SKY has proved himself as a T20I batter for the last couple of years. It was a reward to the displays he has put forward in the format and dominated it.

Why was Suryakumar Yadav Given the preference as T20I captain?

The chief selector of India, Ajit Agarkar was heard giving the reasons behind the selection of Surya as the skipper in the shortest format of international cricket.

Here is what he said -"Suryakumar Yadav was made captain because he is one of the most deserving candidates. He is one of best T20I batters. You want a captain who is likely to play all the games. Hardik Pandya's fitness has been a challenge for him".

However, this decision was a surprise to many fans as Hardik Pandya was projected to be the next in the role before the T20 World Cup 2024. Ajit Agarkar also cleared the air about why Surya was given preference ahead of Hardik.

"Hardik is a very important player but his fitness is a concern. Becomes difficult for selectors/coach to play him every game. We wanted a captain who was available to play all games. And Surya has all the necessary qualities to succeed" - Ajit Agarkar said.
