'Story On Him Selling Panipuri Disappoints Me'- Yashavi Jaiswal's Coach Jwala Singh Debunks Fake Narrative

Former India's Under-19 captain Yashasvi Jaiswal is making waves in international cricket, having had a stellar Test debut against West Indies last month. Jaiswal, 21, finished the two-Test series as a leading run-getter slamming 266 runs, which include a century on debut.

The youngster's rise from the maidans of Mumbai to the iconic Queen's Park Oval has been nothing short of inspiring. Since age-group cricket, Jaiswal has been in the news for having a humble background, where he and his father sold panipuri to make a living, a claim which remains unverified to date.

A photo of Jaiswal alongside a panipuri seller went viral as well that caught national and international media's attention in 2018.

Now Jaiswal's childhood coach Jwala Singh has come ahead and opted to debunk the panipuri narrative altogether.  Speaking to 'Cric Crak', Singh explained why Jaiswal at times sold panipuri to earn quick bucks.

“Yashasvi Jaiswal met me in 2013 while staying in Azad Maidan’s tent and didn’t have much financial support. Though his father worked very hard to keep the family running, there were certain limits. So, in the Azad Maidan Ground, there would be Pani-Puri trolleys that would turn up and Jaiswal would go in a friendly manner, speak with them and at times sell a few panipuri’s to earn 20-25 rupees," Singh said.

Singh further explained the story being the now-viral picture of Jaiswal and Panipuri Seller, who several people presumed to be the opener's father.

"On social media, a photo and a video went viral which shows Jaiswal standing next to a pani-puri guy claiming that he is his father. Media claims that the man next to him is his father, but Jaiswal’s father has come to Mumbai only for work purpose just a few times from 2013 to 2022. And during this period, Jaiswal has stayed with me and my family. We have never treated him like a student but instead as our own child and given all the facilities. So, watching these fake stories on him selling pani-puri does disappoint me because only a part of it is true," he added.

Jaiswal will be in action for India when they take on West Indies in a five-match T20 International series starting today.
