'Shubman Gill Has Done Injustice To His Talent' - Ex-Pakistan Captain's Harsh Verdict

Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt stood critical of Shubman Gill after his sacking from India's playing XI ahead of the second T20I of the series against Afghanistan. The rising young Indian batter was dropped in preference of left-hander Yashasvi Jaiswal, who opened the innings with comeback skipper Rohit Sharma.

The elegant Punjab batter was due to miss the opening game of the three-match series also in Mohali but Yashasvi Jaiswal's untimely "sore right groin" allowed the right-hander to make the cut before he played an attractive but insignificant cameo of 22 off 13 balls.

Gill had been under scrutiny for his inconsistency in the short span of his T20I career. Even though the youngster blasted a magnificent hundred early last year in a decider versus New Zealand and boasts of a strike-rate touching 148, his average after 14 T20Is for India stands at just 25.80.

Butt Gives Gill Flak Over T20I Snub

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Butt blamed Gill's failure to do justice to his obvious talent and promise in the shortest format for India and criticised the mode of his dismissal after an exciting cameo in Mohali, where he was stumped off a googly by Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

"I think Shubman Gill has done an injustice to his talent in the last few games," Butt said. "He is too good a player and has too much skill for the kind of hurry that he has been showing. He scores 20-odd and then plays a loose shot. This is what he wasn’t doing when he had a successful year."

"He just needs to bat and bat without doing anything special. He needs to realise that even if you are the best batter in the world, you can’t play every ball on your own terms. You have to react to the ball instead of dictating it," he added.

Gill's ouster from the playing XI following Rohit's return proved to be a blessing for Jaiswal, the extravagant top-order batter, who hammered 68 off 34 deliveries during the Indian run-chase for the Indore T20I and staked claim a long-term spot in the playing XI.
