Historically, Mumbai to Goa was considered as one of the most preferred journeys among tourists in India. In contemporary cricketing terms, Mumbai to Goa has been reduced to batter Yashasvi Jaiswal’s decision to switch alliance in domestic cricket.

Former India batter Wasim Jaffer is one of the many high-profile voices to have not been able to come to terms with the development. Jaffer, arguably the greatest batter in the Indian domestic circuit, is most surprised by the stage of Jaiswal’s career at which he has decided to move on from the most successful team.

Wasim Jaffer Wanted Yashasvi Jaiswal To Continue Representing Mumbai

During his appearance on ESPNCricinfo’s 'Timeout', Jaffer refused to make sense of Jaiswal’s decision. Jaffer, who himself left Mumbai for Vidarbha at the age of 37, invalidated the 23-year-old player’s choice.

No matter what Goa was offering him. You don’t leave Mumbai, especially at this age. It’s okay if somebody is 34-35 then you want to go out. Somebody who has played from Under-14s to now for Mumbai, and Goa being a plate-group team that has just come into the elite group – for him to go and play there, whatever time he will spend on first-class cricket, I am surprised he’s taken that decision so soon,” Jaffer was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

While Jaiswal has categorically cited a leadership opportunity at Goa as the chief reason behind the move, one wonders if the extent of furore would’ve been the same had Jaiswal left some other team and not Mumbai.

Mumbai’s unmatched achievements in the domestic circuit are perhaps a reason why former players are finding it difficult to believe that a current member of the Indian Test squad has put on display the audacity to make a so-called rebel move.

If another set of reports are to be believed, Jaiswal walked out of Mumbai due to differences with the MCA (Mumbai Cricket Association). Irrespective of the reason or how many matches Jaiswal will be able to play for Goa due to international commitments, what is surprising in real terms is senior cricketers not supporting the professional decision of a player who is expected to make India proud in the future.
