Indian captain Rohit Sharma is set to make a comeback to the national side for the first time in over a month through the much-awaited two-match Test series in South Africa. Just a day prior to the first Test at Centurion Park, the legendary opening batsman signified the importance of the series and also rued the injury-prone absence of senior Indian speedster Mohammed Shami.

While speaking at the pre-match press conference, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma signified the importance of the forthcoming Test series in South Africa citing its historical significance. The cricketer acknowledged the fact that the Indian team has never won a Test series in South Africa, and came agonisingly close to winning in their previous two attempts.

Sharma added that the players in the group are extremely excited to give their best and script history on South African shores this time around.

“Very important Test series. We have never won a series here. It's a big opportunity for us. We came close the last two times. That gives us a lot of excitement and encouragement to do our best,” Rohit Sharma said in the press conference ahead of the Boxing Day Test against South Africa.

Rohit Sharma emphasised the contributions of Indian seamers in team’s recent success in Australian, English and South African conditions. The 36-year-old also rued the absence of senior in-form fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who was forced out of the series owing to his injury.

“Our seamers have done well in Australia, England and South Africa. The seamers have actually pulled their weight in. Shami will be a big miss," he stated.

Under Rohit Sharma, Team India will take on South Africa in the first of their two-match series at Centurion Park between December 26 and December 30. India’s all-format tour will subsequently conclude with their Test series-decider at Cape Town in the first week of January.

The two Test matches also constitute a part of the ongoing 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
