In any global cricket tournament, Team India starts as firm favourites and already has to deal with a mountain load of pressure on its shoulders from former players, and fans alike to perform and round up as winners.

The upcoming Asia Cup 2023 is no different, which will also act as a precursor to the all-important ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 taking place in India from October-November.  With no international titles since 2013, the expectations on players is at an all-time high.

Former India captain and one of the finest batters of all time, Sunil Gavaskar talked about the pressure of expectations on Team India in the coming months.

As quoted by Indian Express, Gavaskar, speaking at a book launch, explained that the Indian team is under the most pressure and hoped that no slip-ups would happen in coming tournaments.

Here's what Sunny G said

"I don’t think there’s any other cricket team in the world which is under as much pressure of expectations than the Indian team. Because every match that the team plays, the fans, the followers — not just in India, but across the world — expect and want India to win.

In sport, we all know that sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t. The pressure can be telling and I think that’s the kind of pressure the Indian team is currently experiencing with everyone wanting them to win the Asia Cup and the World Cup — which will be held in a month and a bit,"

The batting maestro further urged fans to 'understand' if things go south for India and not slam players left-right and centre while asking fans to collectively pray for their success in Asia Cup and CWC 2023.

India will begin their Asia Cup 2023 tourney against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 at Pallekele.
