The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) suspended the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) for a week on Friday, citing security concerns linked to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. The abrupt decision came hours after Thursday’s Punjab Kings vs. Delhi Capitals clash in Dharamshala was halted mid-match.

After the halt, spectators were evacuated and players were escorted safely to their hotels. A dedicated Vande Bharat train was later arranged to relocate players, staff, and broadcast crews from Dharamshala to Delhi, where the contingent arrived Friday. Sourav Ganguly, an ex-KKR captain strengthened his faith and showed optimism on IPL's restart.

Sourav Ganguly's Believes In India Dominating Pakistan

Sourav Ganguly backed the suspension move of IPL while stressing the fact that it is the best decision in war situation.

“There is a war-like situation in the country, and the BCCI had to do this as there are so many Indian and foreign players. Let’s hope the IPL restarts soon, as an important stage of the tournament is around the corner,” Ganguly stated.

Notably, after the halt, BCCI officials emphasised the precautionary measures as necessary given the tournament’s venues—including Dharamshala, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Jaipur—which are falling in regions deemed sensitive. Ganguly further added to these.

“BCCI had to do this, especially [for] Dharamshala, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Jaipur… It is necessary to do this according to the situation that happened last night. With time, it will get better and matches will also be played. BCCI will complete the IPL, and this situation will end very soon as Pakistan will not be able to handle the pressure for a long time,” Ganguly added.

Significantly, HPCA member Sanjay Sharma confirmed coordination between stakeholders, noting, “Because of the tension… yesterday’s match… was called off in the middle due to security reasons. The administration was fully aware of this.”

Now, the league’s resumption hinges on improved diplomatic conditions, with organisers prioritising player and public safety. Meanwhile, the ECB has also offered to resume the league in England which also subtly hints at England's interest in engaging their audience for league cricket.
